Abstract
572,929. Gun turrets ; cartridge-belt feed-mechanism. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. May 27, 1942, No. 7210. Convention date, July 9,1941. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Cartridge belts for automatic guns are fed from a fixed belt box over a tapered roller mounted on a spindle fixed to the gun. The arrangement is such that cartridges lying in the belt box with their axes at right angles to the gun are, during the feed, turned into line with the gun feed box. The feed is unaffected by gun elevation. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the cartridge-belt feedmechanism is shown applied to an upper turret 12 on aircraft mounted on a vertical column 18 rotated for training by an electric motor 16, the guns being carried at the ends of a transverse shaft 32 rotated for elevation'by a motor 34. The gunner occupies a seat 26 with foot-rests 28, or stands on a platform 30. Each cartridge belt passes from a belt box over a tapered roller 54 rotating on an inclined spindle 52. The cartridges are oonfined by end plates 56, 58 and by a fixed guide plate 60, and are turned into line with the gun feed box as they are conveyed upwardly from the belt box 162, Fig. 7, over a roller 159 and round the tapered roller 54. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the cartridges are guided into the feed box by a further roller 155.
