Abstract

559,478. Aircraft gun mountings. SUPER-MARINE AVIATION WORKS (VICKERS), Ltd., and KIMBER, W. G. April 17, 1937, No. 11034. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] A trainable aircraft turret b has two or more guns d mounted for elevation about trunnions d<SP>1</SP> in a slot or recess b<SP>1</SP> divided off from the remaining part of the turret in which part the gunner and ammunition belt boxes c are accommodated. Fig. 6 shows the invention applied to a nose or tail turret trained by a motor b<SP>7</SP> four machine guns being mounted for elevation en bloc by a motor d<SP>2</SP>. The ammunition belt boxes c are superposed to form a seat for the gunner using a sight e his legs straddling the gun compartment. The cartridges in the belt boxes c are .arranged vertically as shown in Fig. 7, the belts being guided through passages c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> and over rollers c<SP>3</SP>, c<SP>4</SP> to feed the guns through the hollow gun trunnions. For compactness the upper pair of guns may be inverted with respect to the lower pair. The mechanism casings of the guns may be enclosed in a box d<SP>3</SP> to afford protection against extraneous matter and to provide heat insulation. Fig. 9 shows four guns d arranged for evacuation of cartridge cases and belt links through shoots d<SP>5</SP>, d<SP>4</SP> respectively. The invention may be applied to a retractable midships turret.
