Abstract

574,673. Belt-fed machine guns. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. Oct. 22, 1938, No. 30569. [Class 92 (ii)] A machine gun 2, Fig. 1, in a rotary turret 1 is fed with rounds 14 by a belt 5 uncoiled from a remote drum 4, the belt passing along a light metal or plastic guide channel 7, Fig. 2, leading to a guide exit 9 below the axis of rotation of the turret and being free to twist between this exit and the entrance guide 10 on the turret. Further, the belt is fed along the guide by sprockets 16, Fig. 4, power driven independently of the gun mechanism, but operative only when the gun is firing. Fig. 3 shows a brake 21 for the drum 4 normally applied by a spring 24, but released by a solenoid 25 energized when the gun is fired. Guide rollers 31, 32, Fig. 7, are provided at bends 6, 8 in the belt. Specifications 486,684 and 495,187 are referred to.
