Abstract
Butylenes and pentenes are converted to diolefines by catalytic reaction in gaseous or vapour form in presence of a metallic hydrogenation-dehydrogenation catalyst at a space velocity of 0.3 to 1.0 litres of the starting material in its liquid state per litre active catalyst volume per hour under atmospheric pressure at 550-700 DEG C. If sub-atmospheric pressure is used or a non-reactive gas such as nitrogen, helium, steam, or methane is added, the minimum space velocity is 0.05 litre, the maximum space velocity still remaining at 1.0 litres as above for a partial pressure of the starting material of 100 mm. of mercury. The catalyst may be copper which has been oxidized and subsequently reduced. The first Provisional Specification refers to the conversion of trimethylethylene to isoprene and cyclopentene to cyclopentadiene. Specifications 307,945, [Class 2 (iii)], and 532,942 are referred to.
