Abstract

Conjugated diolefines are prepared by reaction in the vapour phase between a mono-olefine containing up to 6 carbon atoms and formaldehyde or acetaldehyde in the presence of a phosphate of an element of Group IIIB of the periodic table. The mono-olefine is preferably tertiary and may be isobutene, 2-methylbutene-2, or 2-methylbutene-1. The molar proportion of olefine to aldehyde may be 1 to 20:1. An inert diluent, amounting to up to 95% by volume of the gas mixture may be used, such as steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or a lower paraffin, e.g. by using formalin as a source of formaldehyde. The temperature may be 150-400 DEG C. and the space velocity 0,1-50 moles of aldehyde per litre of catalyst per hour. Preferred catalysts are boron and aluminium phosphates supported if desired on silica, alumina, kieselguhr or surface active clays and may be regenerated by oxidation. Specifications 826,545 and 826,546 are referred to.
