Abstract

Anisole is obtained by the vapour phase reaction between phenol and methylating agent, such as methyl alcohol or methyl ether, at a temperature in the range 175-225 DEG C, preferably about 200 DEG C., in the presence of activated alumina as catalyst. A detailed example is given.
