Abstract
Ethylene oxide is prepared by reacting, in the vapour phase and at elevated temperature, ethylene and a gas containing free oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising an intimate mixture of separately prepared silver oxide with from 0.5 to 50 per cent calculated on the weight of silver oxide, of powdered siliceous material selected from quartz, a silicate glass or fused silica. The mixture of silver oxide and powdered siliceous material may be unsupported or supported on firebrick or similar material. The process may be carried out in a temperature range of 150 DEG -400 DEG C. and at pressure up to 50 atmospheres. Air is conveniently used as the oxygen-containing gas but inert gaseous diluents such as nitrogen may be used in the reaction mixture. Improved results are obtained by dispersing or pasting the catalyst with an organic liquid such as methanol or acetone. Specifications 587,584, 627,987, 675,480 and 675,482 are referred to.ALSO:Catalysts for use in the production of ethylene oxide from ethylene and a gas containing free oxygen comprise an intimate mixture of separately prepared silver oxide with from 0.5 per cent to 50 per cent, calculated on the weight of silver oxide, of powdered siliceous material selected from quartz, a silicate glass or fused silica. The catalyst may be unsupported or supported on firebrick or similar material. Improved results are obtained by dispersing or pasting the catalyst with an organic liquid such as methanol or acetone.
