Abstract

572,776. Treating ores; alloys. MILLER, G. L., and MUREX, Ltd. March 8, 1943, No. 3711. [Class 82 (i)] Firm coherent masses of a molybdenum oxide suitable for addition to molten ferrous metal or alloy, are produced by pressing the oxide in powder form in the presence of an aqueous solution of ammonia or ammonium molybdate in proportion up to, e.g. 1 per cent by weight and drying the pressing. The proportion of aqueous medium may be less than 2 per cent by weight and the pressing operation is conducted at a pressure of 2-5 tons per sq. in. For the production of alloy steels, the briquettes so produced are added to molten baths of carbon steel or cast iron or ferrous alloys containing nickel or chromium, the bath also containing carbon and/or other reducing agents such as manganese or silicon.
