Abstract

282,387. Feild, A. L. Dec. 18,1926, [Convention date]. Alloys.-Stainless or rustless irons containing about 12-18 per cent. of chromium and 0.07- 0.17 per cent. of carbon are made by a two-stage process in the first stage of which high-carbon ferro-chrome is incorporated in an iron bath and carbon is eliminated by means of iron ore or preferably roll scale, chromium passing also into the slag, and in the second stage of which the greater part of the chromium is reduced from the slag by the addition of a non-carbonaceous reducing agent, which may be ferro-silicon, and a basic material such as lime and passes into the metal bath. Final adjustment of the chromium content may be made by the addition of iron or lowcarbon ferro-chrome, and the bath may be cooled to the desired tapping temperature by adding stainless steel scrap. Other alloying elements such as nickel, copper, molybdenum, and vanadium may be added.
