Abstract

572,413. Hydroplanes. HAMILTON, A. M. Jan. 24,1944, No. 18301/42. [Class 113 (ii)] The hull, body, or float 1 of a highspeed driven or towed water-craft is fitted with laterally projecting vanes 2 extending beyond the sides of the hull and attached to or supported by the hull or other part of the craft through shockabsorbing devices 4, each vane being of framed truss-like form constituted by upper and lower vane members 9, Fig. 3, joined together at their ends and intermediately thereof by other members 8. There may be other horizontal members between the members 9. The shockabsorbing devices may be of the pneumatic, hydraulic, or frictional types. The vanes may be supported like beams and /or cantilevers, and they may be made of metal so as to be heavier than water, or of wood or hollow metal so as to be buoyant. They may be fixed or made wholly or in part adjustable as to angle of incidence, and the adjustment means may be interconnected with the controls of fore-and-aft rudders. They may be brought into or swung beneath the hull, for example by means of a master hydraulic cylinder 7, Fig. 2, wire ropes or chains 6, and wheels 5 on shafts 3 which may be solid or hollow and provided with clutches. Fig.. 15 shows vanes 2 carried by the lower wing 14 of a biplane flying boat. Fig. 16 shows vanes 2 with cross-bracings 23 and carried by outriggers constituted by crossbeams 20 and longitudinal cylindrical beams 22 which may serve as floats or fuel tanks. Fig. 22 shows a submarine or other enclosed hull vessel 32 with vanes 2 supported by pairs of inclined shock-absorbing struts 28, 29 and controlled by levers 33.
