Abstract

516,651. Hydroplanes. DENNY & BROS., Ltd., W. and ALLAN, J. F. July 4, 1938, No. 19772. [Class 113 (ii)] In high speed vessels in which at high speed the forepart of the hull has planing surfaces or supports such surfaces and in which the aft part is supported clear of the water by one or more submerged hydrofoils these hydrofoils have high aspect ratio and are set at an angle of incidence just less than that for maximum lift - drag ratio. In Fig. 2, surface breaking planes pb are fixed by struts sb to the hull a and a hydrofoil p is supported by struts s to which are fitted screw propellers and rudders. The aft part of the hull has a broad planing surface x which may be swept downwardly towards the stem. The hydrofoil and the forward planes may have a dihedral angle as in Fig. 2b and may be swept forwards or backwards. The hydrofoil p may have a hinged portion or may turn about a pivot l, Fig. 3, and is then adjusted for incidence by a rod r which passes up the strut s and thence inboard through a gland m. In addition automatic adjustment is effected by connecting the rod r wih a rider plane z. When the forward planing surfaces are part of the hull these may have a hollow V-section and may have a step which may also have controlling flaps.
