Abstract

582,985. Hydrofoils. HAMPDEN, G. C. E., DALZIEL, J., and MACPHERSON, P. B. July 4, 1944, No. 12274/43. [Class 113 (ii)] In a hydrofoil of the type comprising a main foil member disposed transversely beneath the hull 12 of the craft and constituted either by a pair of inclined sections connected in V-formation, or by a horizontal centre section 10 flanked at either end by an inclined flanking member 11, and attached at each end to the hull by a re-entrant bracket 13 also of foil section, both the angle of incidence and the chord dimension of the main foil member increase from the mid-point towards the outer extremities. Strengthening stays 141 may be provided and the members 11 may be inclined forward or aft of the transverse plane of the member 10. The members 10, 11, 13 may be pivotally connected together and to the hull 12, the main foil member as a whole may pivot about a horizontal transverse axis, and it may be retractable into a recess in the hull and/or capable of being jettisoned.
