[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In a continuous wire-drawing machine, the wire passes through an annealing-furnace between one stage and the next. Wire, particularly of stainless steel, nickel-chromium, or high-speed steel, that requires annealing between each stage, passes from the die f and drawing-drum a through a heating tube d round a pulley j in an end chamber h and through a cooling tube e to a second die g and drum b, whence it passes again through the heating and cooling tubes and so on. Inert gas is supplied to the tubes through the chamber h at i, the tube d may be electrically heated and the tube e water or air cooled. The annealing-furnace may comprise a number of pairs of tubes d, e arranged side by side.
