Abstract
737,044. Annealing metal strand. SYNCRO MACHINE CO. July 6, 1953 [Aug. 30, 1952], No. 18724/53. Class 72. Metal strand, i.e. wire or strip, is continuously annealed by being heated electrically in two stages, the metral strand in the second stage being in part in a liquid bath, and then being quenched in two stages to cool the strand to room temperature. As shown, the strand is fed from a coil 11 to a pulley 13 connected to an electrically neutral point, over adjustable pulleys 14-16, to a pulley 17 connected to a source of electric power, and through a pipe 18 containing a liquid, e.g. water, to a pulley 19 connected to an electrically neutral point. The metal strand is then cooled in a quenching device 20 by a counter current flow of water and dried by an air blast in a drier 22. It may then be coiled at 24. The strand may leave the quenching device with sufficient residual heat to be self-drying. A thin film of steam or water on the strand between the exit from the pipe 18 and the entrance to the quenching device 20 is stated to prevent oxidation of the strand.
