Abstract
566,670. Friction clutches. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd., BRIGGS, T. H., and BRIGGS, W. H. May 6,1943, No. 7194. [Class 80 (ii)] A'clutch member e fixed to a shaft a is drivingly connected to the other clutch member b through friction plates i, j. A cam plate v free on the shaft a is drivingly connected to a pressure plate q by guide pins y and pins 2 fixed to the cam v have adjustable caps 4 which abutcompression springs 3 carried in housings 5 fixed to the pressure plate q. A cam plate w is fixed to the shaft a, the adjacent faces of the cams v, w, interengaging by caming faces 8, 9, Fig. 2. A rod 11 passing axially through the shaft a may act on the pressure plate q to hold the friction plates disengaged. When the rod 11 is released the clutch is engaged. If slip occurs the cam faces 8, 9, move the cam v axially and through the springs 3 the clutch engaging pressure is increased. In a modification, one of the clutch plates, Fig. 4 (not shown) forms a driving or driven member and the cam plate is slidably dogged to a sleeve free on the shaft.
