Abstract

565,723. Resilient wooden appliances for wheels &c. KING, E. P., and WOOD DEVELOPMENT, Ltd. Feb. 17, 1943, No. 2677. [Class 144 (i)] [Also in Groups XIV and XXXII] A springy wooden appliance, for use in spring wheels comprises one or more units each consisting of a number of sheets of plywood, veneer, fibre-board or the like parallel with or slightly inclined to one another, or a plurality of concentric plywood &c. cylinders, rings or the like, supported by spacers of resilient material, e.g. cork, rubber, mechanical felt, the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Resilitex," &c., arranged in staggered relation in the alternate spaces between the sheets, cylinders or rings. The sheets may consist of a plurality of layers of plywood &c. with one or more interlayers of felt or fabric and, in a modification, may be replaced by slats or other shaped pieces. In the spring wheel shown in section in Figs. 11, 13, the hub 33 is built up from discs or dished metal plates adapted to be secured to the wheel axle while the resilient part of the wheel consists of concentric cylinders or rings 34 and spacers 21 bolted together, the bolts 35 being a loose fit to give flexibility. The wheel rim 36 is composed of layers of wood with interlayers of felt &c. and the tyre or tread 37 of thin rubber or rubber substitute or of thin metal with or without a rubber &c, covering. An annular fabric &c. covering 38 affords protection against weather. For heavy loads, two or more wheels, secured together as shown in Fig. 11, may be utilised. Specifications 559,527 and 559,528, [both in Group X], are referred to.
