Abstract

565,081. Steam engines. ABBEY, A. (Aktiebolaget Gotaverken). June 25, 1943, No. 10348. [Classes 122 (ii) and 122 (iii)] In a quadruple expansion engine having a single control valve 8 between the first and second expansion stages, two valves 20, 21 connected in parallel with regard to steam flow are arranged between the third and fourth stages. Valves 20, 21 control admission to the third stage, overflow from the third to the fourth and exhaust from the fourth stage. Alternatively, two additional piston valves or a plane slide valve may control exhaust from the fourth stage. An exhaust steam turbine driven compressor 18 or a superheater or both may be provided between the second and third stages. The cranks of the first and second stages are displaced by 180 degrees as also are those of the third and fourth, the cranks of the second and third being displaced by 90 degrees. The various valves may be plane or piston slide valves or poppet valves.
