564,850. Valves. ASPIN, F. M. March 11, 1943, No. 3949. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] An engine cylinder for use with a rotary valve assembly comprising a valve housing g located at the end of the engine cylinder and formed with a tapering gas - sealing and bearing surface which co-operates with a corresponding surface on a rotary valve member h within the housing, the valve member h having a through passage open to the cylinder at one end and co-operating at its other end with a port in the tapered surface of the housing is formed with an end wall or baffle having an opening c offset from the axis of the cylinder and smaller than the adjacent end of, and directed towards, the valve h, the opening having an area substantially equal to that swept by the end of the passage in the valve h. The wall or baffle is formed in a separate member b of good heat-conducting metal which constitutes an extension of the cylinder a and is provided with spaces b<1> for cooling fluid directed on to the back of the baffle by a nozzle d<1>. An upstanding flange c on the extension b engages a recess on the valve h with the interposition of a sealing ring f. As shown, the end of the passage is concentric with the valve h, the baffle being crescent-shaped in plan, and the opening c is directed towards the ignition means g<2>. The top of the piston fits closely to the inclined lower surface of the baffle to limit gas pressure thereon and minimize the danger of detonation. Specification 463,412 is referred to.
