Abstract

564,561. Valves ; cylinder heads. POMFRET, A.. July 24, 1943, No. 12075. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXVI] A rotary or oscillating disc valve 10 is freely mounted in a flanged bearing plate 8 which is clamped in a shallow recess 5 in the cylinder head 2 between the bottom thereof and a gasket disposed against the cylinder head coverplate 1, the bearing plate 8 giving a predetermined clearance to the disc 10 to allow for expansion and making a gas-tight-joint with the disc which controls the inlet and exhaust ports 6, 7 formed in the cylinder head ; the bearing plate and the cylinder head cover. The disc 10 is provided with diametrically opposite ports 10A and is rotated by a short shaft 14 driven by the engine and operatively connected at 12, 15 to a boss 11 on the disc. The shaft rotates in a bush 13A housed in the cylinder head cover 1 and extending between the disc and a casing 17 for gears which drive the shaft 14. The casing 17 has a detachable coverplate 31. Two sparking plugs 34 are provided each disposed opposite a cut-away portion of the piston which at top dead-centre almost reaches the cylinder head 2 and separates the combustion space into two chambers, one adjacent each sparking plug. The invention is applicable to fluid pressure engines generally.
