Abstract

563,467. Aeroplanes. PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and MILES, G. H. March 27, 1942, No. 4113. [Class 4] A tandem plane aeroplane has camber changing flaps on both planes, the forward plane being fitted in addition with elevators and the rear wing with ailerons. A forward plane 14 is fitted with elevators 13, which do not extend to the wing tips, and with camber varying flaps. The rear plane 15 is swept back and is provided with flaps 19 and ailerons 20. The forward plane 14 is at the lower part of the fuselage and the rear plane at the upper part and both are of lifting section with positive incidence. Power units 16 mounted on the rear plane drive airscrews 17. Rudders 12 are mounted at the tips of the plane 15 or at the rearward extremities of the power unit nacelles, and an additional directional control 18 is provided at the tail of the fuselage. By fitting flaps to both planes their simultaneous use does not alter the trim of the aeroplane. According to the Provisional Specification an engine may drive a further airscrew at the rear of the fuselage.
