[Class 4] In a rotating-wing aircraft, stabilizing surfaces which in their position of rest are substantially vertical are adapted to be inclined relative to the air stream of the rotating wing or wings by rotation about axes substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage and are arranged in pairs relatively to at least one axis of the aircraft in such a manner that at least one stabilizing surface lies on each side of the fuselage and that at least one stabilizing surface lies forwardly and at least one surface rearwardly of the vertical axis of the rotating wing assembly. The lower edges of at least one pair of the stabilizing surfaces, in the position of rest, are not higher than the top of the aircraft fuselage. In Figs. 3, 15 the pairs of stabilizing surfaces 27, 28 and 29, 30 are rotatable on axes 35 which are inclined at a negative angle of incidence to the line of flight and when used in conjunction with a wing of which the inner portion of each blade is set at a small or zero angle of incidence, some of the stabilizing surfaces are arranged outwardly from those portions of the blades. In addition to the stabilizing surfaces, elevators 31, 32 and a rudder 33 are provided for control when flying as an aeroplane. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, one pair of surfaces 44, 45 is mounted centrally and two pairs 40, 41 and 42, 43 are placed forwardly and rearwardly near the fuselage. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 5, the pair of stabilizing surfaces 144, 145 is associated with a pair of surfaces 48, 49 mounted in the plane of the longitudinal axis of the fuselage 34. The elevators 70, 71 may be rotated through 90‹ and used as stabilizing surfaces in vertical flight. Some of the stabilizing surfaces may be formed of relatively movable parts forming double flaps, or surfaces of inverted T- or V-shape, as described with reference to Figs. 6 to 11 (not shown). In the operating arrangement, Fig. 14 the stabilizing surfaces 54, 55; 56, 57; 58, 59 are operated in pairs from a control wheel 62 and pedals 63 and, in addition, may be selectively operated in conjunction with the control of the elevators 60 and rudder 61. The controls for the stabilizing surfaces may be self-locking, e.g., by means of worm and worm wheel gearing.
