Abstract

498,775. Gun-muzzle attachments ; noise and recoil diminishing. BARNES, F. G. Feb. 9, 1938, No. 4031. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1937. [Class 92 (ii)] A muzzle attachment for a gun 8, and stated to be particularly applicable to naval armament, comprises a chamber 7 in which a high vacuum is maintained after the gun is loaded and the breech closed, the projectile, when fired, breaking an easily frangible closure 10. The closures 10 are stored in a magazine 14 along which they are fed by a manually operated rack gear 17, 18, the end closure sliding over the aperture 9 so as to seat on a joint ring 12 when the previously positioned closure has been broken by the passage of the projectile. A seat 11 is provided for the closure for the aperture 9. A perforated baffle 19 with central aperture 20 is fitted, and a connection 13 to a source of vacuum is provided. The length of the chamber 7 is such that the base of the projectile is well clear of the muzzle of the gun before the closure 10 is broken. The provision of the vacuum chamber is stated to increase the muzzle velocity, to reduce the recoil and to minimize the noise of discharge.
