[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIV] The planet pinion carrier a of a bevel wheel differential gear is driven by a constant speed motor, one sun wheel d being fixed to the driven shaft e and the other sun wheel f being loose on a shaft g journalled in the hub a<SP>1</SP> of a carrier a and in a fixed bearing h. A gear j, loose on the shaft g is driven by a variable speed motor and is connected to a clutch member k slidable on the hub of the sun wheel f and being clutchable at f<SP>1</SP> to the sun wheel f. In operation, the variable speed motor, driving through a shaft p and worm n, and the constant speed motor driving through a worm c, are both run up to speed and the clutch f<SP>1</SP> is engaged. The shaft e is then stationary. The variable speed motor is then gradually stopped to bring the shaft e up to speed. The shaft e will increase in speed if the variable speed motor is reversed. The connection between the shaft e and the driven machine will include a one way clutch if the machine is not to be reversed. The invention is applicable to a multiblock wire-drawing machine having a separate variable speed gear and control motor for each block, the planet carriers of all the gears being driven from a single constant speed motor.
