Abstract

643.870. Variable-speed gears. CHARPENTIER, J. F. G. M. L. July 15, 1947, No. 18773. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1945. [Class 80(ii)] Stepped integral planets 4, 5, Fig. 1, mounted in a driven carrier 7 and respectively meshing through idler planets 3 and directly, driving and reaction suns 2, 6, are locked centrifugally by internal friction to bring in a direct drive and cause the sun 6 to overrun friction detents 10, Fig. 3, pivoted on a fixed casing 9 and previously holding the sun 6 against backward rotation to give an underdrive through the gearing. Two or more such epicyclic units may be arranged in series to give a corresponding number of geared drives. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the planets 5 may be unbalanced by borings therein to assist locking. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
