Abstract

555,231. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 27, 1942, No. 4069. Convention date, March 29, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] Hollnw electron beams are produced by an annular cathode co-acting with a concentrating and accelerating electrode having annular gaps. As shown in the drawing the cathode is in the form of an annular plate 15 with a central recess 16 coated with thermionically emissive material, the sides of the recess being raised to prevent creepage of the coating material during operation. A multi-turn heating coil 25 embedded in insulating material 26 is carried in a metal casing 27, which is mounted in two nested heat shields 28, 29. The concentrating electrode consists of two annular plates 17a, 17b, spaced to form a gap 18, the sides of the gap being stepped as shown. The accelerating anode is formed of two annular plates 19a, 19b spaced to form an annular gap 20 in line with the gap 18 and the emissive part of the cathode. The edges of the gap 20 have flanges depending into the gap 18, and the emissive surface of the cathode is curved to a radius struck from a point in the gap 20. External and internal flanges 23, 24 on the concentrating and accelerating electrodes enclose the cathode and concentrating electrode respectively. The parts of the assembly are supported on a glass annulus 30 and multi-legged glass member 31 by stiff wires. When assembled in a discharge device, the beam forming elements are associated with a target and control electrodes, Fig. 1 (not shown). Specification 545,835 is referred to.
