Abstract

872,170. Velocity-modulated tubes. FERRANTI Ltd. Feb. 7, 1958 [Nov. 10, 1956], No. 34445/56. Class 39(1). An electron gun, particularly for high power klystrons, comprises a cathode having a plane or dished emissive surface provided with an aperture through which a modulating electrode protrudes. In one embodiment a cathode 5 is carried on a molybdenum disc 3 which is brazed to one end of an insulating cylinder 1. Heater 2 surrounds cylinder 1 and heat is conducted to the cathode through the insulating cylinder 1 and skirted portion 4. A rod-shaped modulating electrode 13 is secured at one end by metal cap 16 and protrudes through aperture 12 in cathode 5 at the other. The gun is completed by focusing electrode 10 supported by cylindrical insulator 11, and by an apertured anode 8. Electrode 13 may be rounded at the protruding end or may be a hollow cylinder in which case the cathode aperture is annular, or alternatively two modulating electrodes may be provided one being tubular and surrounding the second which is rod-shaped, the electrodes being insulated from each other and from the cathode, though they need not extend beyond the cathode by the same distance. In each case, however, they extend a distance which is short compared with the anode-cathode distance, e.g. about 2% of this distance. The modulation is applied to both the focusing electrode 10 and the electrode 13 in a negative sense with respect to the cathode, cut-off being obtained with a modulation potential of about 1 / 10th of the anode potential. Cap 16 and member 4 may provide contacts for electrode 13 and the cathode respectively.
