Abstract

708,216. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 23, 1952 [June 27, 1951], No. 15760/52. Class 39(1) A magnetron comprises a plurality of elongated anode elements 19, 20 in parallel mutually spaced relation forming a closed array, two anode ring portions 17, 18 mounted in spaced coaxial relationship, two discs 14, 15 of insulating material each secured to one of the ring portions, alternate ones of the anode elements being supported from one of the ring portions and the disc secured to the other ring portion, and a cathode 13 supported between the discs in accurately spaced relation within the array of anode elements. The discs 14, 15, which may be of mica, may be clamped to the anode rings by tabs 21 provided on the anode rings; they are provided with slots 24, through which the anode elements 19, 20 pass, and with central apertures in which the cathode 13 is supported. The discs serve as supports and also prevent electrons escaping from the discharge space; the emissive coating 25 on the cathode does not extend to the discs so that with low anode voltages electrons reach the discs with only a small velocity and do not damage then or cause secondary emission. If higher anode voltages are used the cathode may be provided with flanges or embossments to prevent electrons bombarding the discs. The electrode structure may be supported by the anode leads 6, 7, which are welded to two of the tabs 21. The anode leads 6, 7 provide an output to an external circuit which may be adjusted to tune the magnetron. The anode rings and elements are of non- magnetic material such as stainless steel, and the envelope may be of glass or of a non-magnetic metal.
