Abstract
556,957. Cathode-ray tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. May 8, 1942, No. 6224. Convention date, May 7, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] A hollow beam is formed by a cathode 14, Fig. 1, together with an electrostatic field produced by a number of anodes 15 ... 18 surrounding the cathode and a further electrode 19, and a magnetic field produced by the coil 25. The electrodes 15 ... 19 are at increasing positive potentials relative to the cathode ; they are supported from mica discs 20 by metal bars 21, 22, 23 to which leads 24 are connected. In a modification a filamentary cathode 14a, Fig. 3, is placed between anodes 29, 30 with flanges 27, 28 an accelerator electrode 19a having an annular orifice 31 for the beam which is constrained by a magnetic field H. In a further arrangement an indirectly heated cathode 14b, Fig. 4, has an emmission surface 32 at an angle to the beam axis the beam being formed by the electrodes 19b, 33 in the field H. The beam may be velocity modulated.
