Abstract

552,234. Electric induction furnaces. INTERNATIONAL ALLOYS, Ltd., and PRYTHERCH, W.E. Feb. 3, 1942, No. 1408. [Class 39 (iii)] An electric induction furnace suitable for-distilling or subliming metals such as magnesium or zinc from their ores or compounds comprises a water-jacketed metal casting 1 forming a condenser chamber 2 connected by passage 7 to a vacuum pump, and a domed refractory casing 8 forming the heating chamber, which is surrounded by a silica sleeve 11 with water-cooled cap 13, and by a hollow high frequency coil 16 with protecting metal casing 18. Below the furnace is disposed a hydraulic cylinder with ram 19 supporting a member 21 with jacketed base pad 23 provided with a gas-tight sealing ring 24 adapted to seat against the casting 1. A self-contained assembly comprising a metal receiver 25 carrying a spider 28 supporting a refractory ring 27 on which rests a closed crucible 26 is brought into position below the furnace and raised into it by the ram 19. The crucible may be of steel or a refractory, and is provided with a vapour outlet tube 32 leading, through a tube 30, to the receiver 25. After the furnace operation, the crucible and receiver may be lowered and removed.
