Abstract

540,105. Consolidating scrap. STERN, M. April 2, 1940, No. 5948. [Class 83 (iv)] Light metal scrap is consolidated by compressing at a temperature below that producing oxidation at a damaging rate and lying between 250- 500‹C. The scrap is preferably preheated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere in a rotary muffle kiln and its temperature is controlled during compression, preferably by heating means. For magnesium a temperature of 300‹ C. and a pressure of 0.5 to 1.5 metric tons per sq. cm. or 320‹ C. and 0.4 tons may be used and for aluminium or the alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Duralamin 400‹ C. and 0.5 to 2.5 tons. Consolidation may be effected by repeated blows of an air hammer.
