Abstract
544,078. Steering vehicles. ALVIS, Ltd., DUNN, W. M., KEMP, A., and BEERE, R. H. Oct. 29, 1940, No. 15816. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a truck, trolley or the like having a chassis supported at one end on a through axle carrying wheels steerable by steering arms and a trackrod connected to a draw-bar, lowering of the draw-bar applies a brake to the wheel through the track-rod. The non-rotatable wheel hub assembly 13 is steerably mounted at 14 on the through axle 11 which is provided with spring supports 12 for the front end of the chassis of a trolley which may be such as described in Specification 544,077, [Group XXXII]. A brake shoe 16 pivoted at 18 on a bracket 19 bolted to the non-rotatable hub assembly 13 extends over the brake drum 17 of the wheel and has integral therewith a steering arm 15 disposed in the horizontal plane of the axle 11. Guides 21 for the vertical movement of the shoe and arm about the pivot 18 are formed on a bracket 22 bolted to the hub assembly, a spring 23 for disengaging the shoe being carried by the bracket. A draw-bar is horizontally pivoted at 26 to a member 25 which is vertically pivoted at 24 to the axle 11 and to which the track-rod is 28 pivoted by a fork 29 embracing a bush 31 slidable on a pivot 32. The draw-bar thus effects steering movement of the wheels and by engagement with a projection 33 on the rod 28 when it is lowered it applies the shoes 16 to the brake drums.
