Abstract

534,529. Variable pitch propellers. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, F. M. July 26, 1939, No. 21723. [Class 114] Energy is accumulated during pitch-change operations outside the normal range of pitch variation, and is used to effect such abnormal pitch variations, e.g. feathering and unfeathering. The pitch may be changed by a piston 7 carrying racks engaging pinions on the blades. This piston is actuated by oil under pressure supplied through an annular space 22 in the screw shaft, between a fixed seating 21 and a seating on a piston 16 which is moved against a spring 17 by oil under pressure supplied through a conduit 18. When the pressure in the conduit 18 is cut off, the spring 17 returns the piston, and the seats 20, 21 are pressed into contact, the entrapped oil holding the piston in position against a spring 9, and also when the blades are moved into feathering position, against a spring 10. On reopening the lock 20, 21, the release of oil pressure allows the springs to return the blades to normal pitch. The oil pressure is used indirectly to press the rack and pinion into contact.
