Abstract

1,074,873. Feathering propellers. CESSNA AIRCRAFT CO. Sept. 3, 1964 [Sept. 3, 1963], No. 36180/64. Heading B7V. [Also in Divisions E2 and F1] An aircraft propeller has blades 15 mounted in a hub 10 and rotatable about their pitch axes by a piston 22 through connecting-rods 28. The piston is biased to the feathered position against a stop 33 by springs 35 and the centrifugal force on a counterweight 16 and is moved towards the fine pitch position, against flanges (31, Fig. 2, not shown) by hydraulic pressure from a pump 40 (which is driven by the propeller, engine, or otherwise) transmitted through a valve 45, controlled by a governor 44 which gives a high pressure when the engine is running slowly, and lever 47, then through the propeller shaft 12 and a hollow piston-rod 23, 26. According to the invention, when the engine is stopped the piston 22 is returned to the fine pitch position by the reduction in the force on the weight 16 and by movement of the valve 45, e.g. by the governor; and held near there to facilitate restarting by latches (50, Fig. 2, not shown) on the piston 22 arranged to engage the flanges (31). A supplementary piston (60) is fitted within the piston 22 and is urged to the left by springs (61) and to the right by hydraulic pressure transmitted through an orifice (56) in the piston 22. When subjected to hydraulic pressure the latches are held out of engagement with the flanges (31) by another flange (72) on the supplementary piston (60). The springs (61) are stronger than the springs 35, relative to the respective areas of their pistons, and so, as the pressure falls, the piston (60) is first urged to the left by the springs (61) until ramps (66, 67) on the piston (60) and latches (50) engage when the latches are pivoted into engagement with the flanges 31.
