Abstract

528,569. Gyroscopic apparatus. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Feb. 27, 1939, No. 6418. Convention date, March 5, 1938. [Class 97 (iii)] In a gyrovertical of the type described in Specification 393,695, the air stream for the erecting force may be decreased without affecting the air stream for spinning the rotor, a valve being provided for operation to eliminate or reduce the errors in the orientation of the gyroscope which the gravity-responsive means would otherwise produce as the result of the action of acceleration forces in, say, turning of the aeroplane. In the form shown, the rotor casing 1 is mounted in the gimbal ring 3 and the air stream for spinning the rotor 6 enters through screen 15 and passes through the trunnions 4, 2 to the jets 8, the air then passing through apertures 16, baffles 17, and aper tures 18, 19 into the casing 5 from which it is exhausted through pipe 14. The separate air stream for the erecting forces passes through a valve 21, 22, screen 20, trunnion 4<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP>, to an extension of the rotor casing 1 which is provided with apertures 33, 34 adapted to be covered by pendulous members 35, 36 pivoted on the casing at 37, 38. Eccentrics 39 are mounted on the members 35, 36 to vary their hanging and their lower ends are adapted to engage the casing on excessive movement. When the orientation of the gyro is disturbed by acceleration forces of the aeroplane the erecting forces of the air stream come into play but to prevent or eliminate errors due to these forces on the pendulous members the air stream can be reduced or cut off by means of the valve 21, 22 either by hand knob 25 or automatically by a rate of turn indicator connected to the crank 28. Specification 525,876 also is referred to.
