Abstract

527,208. Powdered fuel engines. SCHICHAU GES., F. April 4, 1939, No. 10460. Convention date, April 14, 1938. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] Partitions 7, 8 or a single partition are arranged between a space 5 behind the piston 1 and a space 6 in which the crosshead and crank mechanism are housed ; each partition has two sealing members or groups of sealing members 9, 10 that prevent (1) the ash and sludge forced past the piston rings from entering the mechanism space and (2) the lubricating oil from entering the space 5 behind the piston.. As shown in Fig. 1, the seal for sludge may be held in a stuffing box 9 in a partition 7 whereas the seal for oil may be held in a partition 8. In an alternative construction, Fig. 2, both groups of sealing members are held in a housing 17. In this construction the oil scraped off runs into an annular trough 28. The sludge may be washed away or dissolved by a liquid supplied to nozzles 27. A gas may be supplied at 25 to assist the sealing action. The sealing members 15, 16 are in the form of resilient rings either.in one or several parts and are held against the piston rod or a sleeve surrounding it by annular springs 19. Preferably the rings are of metal softer than the metal of the piston rod. The rings may be modified in construction and arrangement to enable the sludge or oil to be passed easily away from the rings. A scraping member comprising a leather ring pressed against the rod by a spring or a solid ring forced against the rod by a conical surface in a housing are stated to be suitable alternatives to the rings previously described. The sludge may be discharged from the space 5 in the manner described in Specification 526,271.
