[Class 74 (ii)] Relates to warp machines provided with hooked needles and independently operated tongues for closing the hook of the needles when the loops are to be cast off. To prevent damage to the tip of the tongue, or alternatively faulty fabric, the needles and tongues are so operated that throughout a substantial part of the casting- off operation there is little, if any, relative movement between the needles and the corresponding tongues. In the timing diagram shown, the paths of the end of a needle hook and the tip of the tongue are indicated by curves A, B, and the casting-off period extends from m to n. To facilitate lapping of the warp threads, the needle is retained at substantially constant height while the warp guides are passing between the needles before and after lapping. Curve C indicates the swinging movement of the warp guides, and the needles have a dwell period corresponding to the period a, to b. The tips of the tongues are concealed in the needle shanks from the time when the newly formed loops are passing up the tapered parts of the needles to when the warp guides are passing between the needles after lapping. The needles, tongues, sinkers and warp guides are driven by eccentrics acting in parallel and running at different speeds. The driving arrangements for each of these parts are similar and each comprises eccentrics 9, 10, one of which is driven at twice the speed of the other. Eccentric rods 15. 16 are pivoted to the ends of a two-armed lever 19 pivoted at its centre to a rod 6 connected to a bar carrying the needles or other parts.
