Abstract

618,583. Warp knitting-machines. HANNAY, R. S. E. June 3. 1942, No. 7541. [Class 74(ii)] The needles of a warp knitting-machine are adapted to swing across the path traversed by the warp guides at the same time as they are raised and lowered to complete the formation of the stitches. As described, four rows of warp guides 14 are positioned above the needles 10 and are shogged at the end of each stitch formation. The needles are mounted in a needle bar 16 supported by one arm of a bell-crank lever 17 pivotally mounted on the end of a rocker arm 37. A second rocker' arm 41 pivotally supports a lever 46 one end 46<2> of which slides in a guide 49 pivoted at 51 to the frame of the machine. Two parallel links 48 respectively connect the rocker arms 37 41 and the ends of the lever 46 and the arm 17' of the bell crank lever 17. A connecting rod 43 connected to the end of a crank 44 mounted on a driving shaft 35 is also connected to the end of the arm 17<1> of the bell-crank lever. A link 20 mounted on the connecting rod is attached to a yoke 19 which slides in guides at the ends of the needle bar 16 to raise and lower the tongues 11 of the needles 10. Rotation of the shaft 35 reciprocates the connecting rod and rotates the lever 46 about the pivot point 47 on the end of the rocker arm 41 and also rotates the bell-crank lever 17 about the pivot point 40 on the rocker arm 37 causing the needles to be raised and lowered. The end 46<2> of the lever 46 slides in the guide 49 which pivots about the point 51 causing the rocker arms 41, 37 tc oscillate and move the bell-crank lever and needles in a forward and backward direction. The combination of both motions swings the needles across the path of the guide and at the same time raises and lowers the needles to complete the knitting operation. The parallelogram formed by the links 48, lever 46 and bell-crank lever 17 enables the motion about the pivot point 51 of the lever 46 to be reproduced by the opposite member about a similar point which is arranged to coincide with the last line of knitted loops X of the fabric causing the needles to be raised and lowered and swung about this point. The raising of the needles by the linkage causes the voke 19 to be lowered to withdraw the tongue 11 from the hook of the needles 10 in preparation for the engagement of the yarn by the hooks. As the needles are raised they follow a path c formed by the four eyes of the guides 14 and when lowered they return along the same path to engage the yarn. Alternatively the path of the needles may be different when raised to that when lowered. The sinkers 12 are formed with protuberances 13 which prevent the displacement of the fabric during the operation of the needles. According to the Provisional Specification, the machine may have pile loop forming members.
