Abstract

556,742. Fuel-injection pumps. KAMMER, G. S. March 16, 1942, No. 3466. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In fuel injectors of the kind giving successive injections at substantially different rates, for example as described in Specification 542,844, the excess pressure which would otherwise be built up behind the pilot jets before the main jets open is relieved by yieldable means provided either in the drive for the fuel pump, or in the space between the pump plunger and the injection nozzles. Fig. 1 shows a spring 15 inserted between the pump plunger 2 and the cam-operated tappet 21 driving the pump. The plunger 2 is connected at 42 to a guide piston 14 sliding in the tappet 21 which is also provided with a spring 17. The pump cylinder 6 is continuously connected by a passage 8 to the pilot jet 12 past a valve 11, and is further connected to the main jets 13 also fitted with a valve 11, by a passage 9 controlled by the plunger 2. The passage 9 is opened by a groove 41 in the plunger 2 to allow the main injection when the spring 15 is compressed solid, with its coils in contact. Inlet to the pump is by a chamber 4 closed by a sleeve 5, and the plunger is rotatable by a lever 22 for adjusting the timing. In a modification the tappet 21 actuates the pump plunger through a lever. In Fig. 6 the yieldable means is in the form of a byepass 32 controlled by the pump 2 and fitted, if desired, with a spring-pressed valve 33. The plunger is adjusted by rack and pinion 24, 25. The pump may be provided with a check valve in communication with the cylinder 6 and adjustable as the plunger is rotated. The pump may be provided with a check valve in communication with the cylinder 6 and adjustable as the plunger is rotated. Cooling-fins may be provided on the pump body 1 around the plunger 2.
