Abstract

521,147. Oil engines. RICARDO, H. R. Oct. 13, 1938, No. 29647. [Class 7 (iii)] A two-stroke compression-ignition engine is provided in the cylinder head with a combustion chamber B<1> having a depth of from one-third to one-half of its maximum diameter, an exhaust valve D<1> opposite a circular mouth leading to the cylinder and formed with an inwardly-directed lip E, and a fuel injector (not shown) mounted at the side of the combustion chamber with its axis tangentially arranged. The lip E may be formed on an insert E<1>. The piston face may be flat as shown, or of spherical or truncated conical form and may have a projection entering the mouth of the combustion chamber. The fuel jet preferably enters the combustion chamber in the same direction as the rotating air charge admitted through tangential piston-controlled ports.
