Abstract

608,728. Combustion chambers and inlet passages. CHAPMAN, C. W. Feb. 28, 1946, No. 6290. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] A fuel-injection compression-ignition internal combustion engine is of the direct injection type having a cylinder 2, a piston 9, an induction chamber 3, one inlet valve 6, and one or more exhaust valves 18, and is characterised in that the induction chamber is shaped or provided with vanes 13 so as to impart a rotary swirl to the air as it passes therethrough into the cylinder through a port 10 controlled by the inlet valve and the head of the piston is provided with a recess 8 to allow the inlet valve to be open while the piston is at top dead-centre. The recess 8 is cylindrical and constitutes the combustion chamber; it may have a projection 21 which would make it annular. The air is given a preliminary swirl by introducing it into the chamber 3 through a tangential passage 20. The diameter of the port 10 is as large as is constructionally possible, and the valve 6 is set as near as possible to the cylinder axis. Part of the cylinder wall at 16 may be cut away to provide a clearance 19 for the exhaust valve. The fuel injector 14 is arranged so that the fuel is directed tangentially and slightly downwards into the combustion chamber and in the same direction as the air swirl.
