Abstract

518,116. Change - over switches. SOC. DES ENGRENAGES DE PRECISION PROCEDES MAAG. May 16, 1938, Nos. 14583 and 14584. Convention dates, May 15, 1937 and Sept. 16, 1937. [Class 38 (v)] A switching device for use in connection with electromagnetic gear-changing apparatus for motor cars comprising a lever moving in a ball- and-socket joint the lower end of the lever being guided in grooves forming a polygon, the sides of which may be curved; the contacts are arranged at the corners of the polygon and operated by the lever. Fig. 3, shows an arrangement which the lever. 3 turns in a ball-and-socket joint 2 in a casing 1 and carries at its lower end a spring-pressed member 6 the point in which engages grooves in a plate 5. These grooves are arranged in a square at the corners of which are arranged the contacts 8. The groove connecting the contacts corresponding to the highest and lowest speeds is preferably curved inwards so as t) pass through the centre of the plate, which corresponds to the neutral position. Depressions in the plate 5 retain the member 6 in the neutral or contact-making positions until positively moved by the lever 3. The contacts 8 consist of spring blades; when the device is used with gear-changing means of the Cotal type three blades are employed two of which are first brought into contact with other and then with the third; by connecting the blades appropriately it can be ensured that the connections occurring in operating such gears are made in the proper order. Several forms of groove forming irregular polygons with re-entrant sides for use for the different numbers of speeds are described. The member 6 may be replaced by a conducting shoe which bridges contacts fixed to the plate 5. If more than three contacts are to be bridged at once those in excess of three are resilient so that the shoe can rest on the three fixed contacts and make contact with the remainder. The casing is connected to its base 14 in such a way as to be adjustable about its axis.
