Abstract

[Class 38 (v)] [See also Group XXXVIII] Direction-indicators are controlled by a metal ball mounted in a tube on the steering wheel which runs to the end of the tube as the wheel is turned to bridge contacts in the indicator circuits. The tube can be tilted by hand to give an indication before a turn is initiated or the contacts may be bridged by hand - operated push - button switches. A " straight-ahead " indication may be given when the ball is centrally disposed in the tubes. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, a short tube of insulating material is pivoted at b, and carries ball C and contacts b<1>, b<2>. When the wheel is turned, the ball runs to one end or the other and bridges contacts b<1> or b<2> to close the respective indicator circuit. To indicate a turn before the wheel is moved, the tube may be swung by hand about b. Spring B<1> holds the tube in its normal position. If small movements of the steering wheel are not to close the indicating circuits, a long tube, as shown in Fig. 6, is provided. As tilting such a tube to give an initial indication is impracticable, hand-operated press-button switches D, Fig. 9, are provided at the ends of the tube to bridge the contacts when required.
