Abstract

1,016,037. Gas turbine plant; centrifugal compressors. R. J. POUIT. Nov. 26, 1962 [Dec. 8, 1961], No. 44651/62. Headings F1C and F1G. In a turbine-driven compresser unit comprising a hot fluid turbine driving a rotary compressor through a common shaft supported by a front bearing and a rear bearing, the rear bearing is carried by an annular delivery scroll of the compressor, within which scroll is mounted the turbine with its casing assembled to the compressor casing. The unit may be arranged to supercharge a heat engine or, alternatively, to supply air to a combustion chamber, the exhaust gases from the latter or the engine being used to drive the turbine. An axial-flow turbine 2, Fig. 1, having a radial bladed wheel (not shown) mounted on a shaft 11 and driven by gases supplied through inlets 25, 26 drives a centrifugal compressor 3 also mounted on the shaft 11. The compressor 3 has radial diffusers 4, axial diffusers 5 in an annular body 6, and an annular scroll 7. The turbine casing is mounted within the annular body 6 and annular scroll 7. The compressor scroll thereby receives some heat from the turbine by radiation. The shaft 11 is supported in roller or plain bearings 12, 13, the bearing 13 being carried by three radial arms each secured by a pin 15 to a support 16 rigid with the compressor scroll 7. The front bearing 12 may be upstream of the compressor 3. Gas, preferably air, from a fan 34, Fig. 4, may be supplied to a channel 22 in the shaft 11 for cooling purposes and to provide a cushion between the stationary and rotating parts in the bearings 12, 13. Excess air may be supplied and allowed to escape through calibrated holes 40. Atomized lubricant may be injected into the air at 41. In an alternative embodiment the fan 34 is omitted and air from the compressor 3 is supplied through a conduit 33 in one of the radial arms to the channel 22.
