Abstract

512,882. Materials for making coke and other products. McCULLOCH, A. Jan. 18, 1938, Nos. 1604 and 7339. [Class 55 (ii)] Coal, cannel, lignite, wood &c. is carbonized in the presence of free sulphur or materials containing free sulphur, such as spent oxide.' The mixture may be heated at a temperature of 150‹-450‹C. for a period of 1 hour or longer; a second heating at 600‹-800‹C. may follow if desired. The mixture may be briquetted using a preferred proportion of sulphur of 1 to 5 per cent. and a carbonizing temperature of 650‹- 750‹C. Finely powdered carbonaceous material is preferred; a suitable fineness for a meta lignitous coal passing through a 72 British Standard sieve. In an example, the latter is briquetted with 2.75 per cent. of sulphur and carbonized at 720‹C. The sulphur may be removed from the resulting fuel by heating in two stages at 500‹-600‹C. and up to 800‹C respectively. Specification 4473/10, [ Class 55 (ii)], is referred to.
