494,770. Materials for making coke. PIOU DE ST.-GILLES, G. O. F., and SAGET, J. G. Y. May 4, 1937, No. 12702. Convention date, May 4, 1936. [Class 55 (ii)] Solid carbonaceous materials are moulded with substances generating an oxidizing medium at raised temperature and a binder if necessary, and the agglomerates are exposed in a confined zone to a temperature from at least 650-750‹ C. for ¢-¥ hour. The baking is preferably effected for the first 10 minutes in an oxidizing atmosphere to initiate a partial combustion. Ammonium or sodium nitrate or potassium permanganate are suitable for providing the oxidizing medium. In an example the agglomerates comprise 40 per cent of wood, previously converted by acidification and electrolysis into a dextrine-containing paste, 40 per cent of soft coal, and 10 per cent each of ammonium nitrate and of a mixture of pitch and tars. The moulded products are heated in an oxidizing atmosphere to 650-700‹ C. ; after combustion has started the oven is closed, the reactions continuing for ten minutes with a moderate introduction of air and for a further 20-30 minutes without the supply of additional air or heat.
