Abstract
Active carbon is obtained by treating carbonaceous material such as wood, wood charcoal, coke, coal &c. in coarse granular form with a solution of an activating chemical such as a salt or an acid, and then heating the treated carbonaceous material in admixture with a substantially equal or greater quantity of a mixture of substances which on heating to the activating temperature react together to give a non-oxidizing gas. The mixture generating the non-oxidizing gas may be pulverized and preformed into aggregates with the granular carbonaceous material by means of a binder. On heating, the carbonaceous material is subjected simultaneously to the action of the chemical and gaseous activating agents, and the product is in granular form, retaining the structure of the original carbonaceous material. According to an example, 600 kgms. of ground potassium sulphate and 130 kgms. of ground anthracite are mixed with 200 kgms. of wood charcoal in grains of 1-2 mm. diameter which has been impregnated with a solution of potassium bisulphate. The mixture is heated under reducing conditions, and the hot carbon-monoxide and -dioxide containing gases are compelled to flow through the granules of impregnated charcoal. The potassium sulphide made by separated, and the carbon grains washed and dried. Specifications 133,759 and 167,195, [both in Class 55 (i)], are referred to.
