Abstract

512,195. Control of A.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 3, 1938, No. 22962. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1937. [Class 38 (iii)] A synchronous motor 1 is started with its field 3 connected in a closed circuit with a resistance 6, and the field is connected to a direct current source when the motor has run up to speed by means of a switch 7 controlled by a relay 11 which relay is connected through a half-wave rectifier 10 between a point on the resistance 6 and the junction of a resistance 17 and a condenser 16, which latter are connected in series across the resistance 6. The motor is connected to the supply by a switch 4 which in closing energises a relay 14 to close contacts 13 after a time interval. The relay 11 holds its contacts open until the frequency of the current in the resistance 6 falls to a predetermined value, whereupon it closes its contacts to energise the operating coil 9 of the switch 7 over the contacts of the relay 14: The switch 7 thereupon effects excitation of the motor field. The current in the coil of the relay 11 leads that in the resistance 6 so that the switch 7 operates at a favourable point in cycle of slip current. Specification 384,567, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
