Abstract

510,192. Aircraft with additional supporting surfaces. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and LOBELLE, M..J. 0. Feb. 10, 1938, No. 4208. [Class 4] In an aircraft provided with rotors which may be mechanically driven or autorotative and which may be extended into the aircraft slip-stream or retracted to lie alongside the fuselage of the aircraft, the rotors are arranged to lie, when extended, immediately in the rear of the trailing edges of the wings of the aircraft. As shown, operation of a jack 21 through links 19 effects extension and retraction of frustoconical rotors 11 mounted on shafts 14. The rotors 11 may be driven, by an electric motor 22, in one or opposite directions according to the position of a member 39 of a dog clutch. The drive is transmitted through either bevel gears 24, 25, 28, 29 and spur gears 33, 34 or spur gears 33, 34. The gear 34 is mounted on a shaft carrying the rotor. A pin 26 forms the hinge about which the rotor is moved for extension or retraction.
