526,899. Controlling aeroplanes. TAMPIER, R. March 28, 1939, Nos. 9655 and 9656. Convention dates, April 8, 1938 and April 29, 1938. [Class 4] A multi-engined aircraft has one or more propellers having an inclinable axis or axes and one or more propellers of reversible pitch so that by adjusting the inclination and pitch of these propellers the forward thrust may be neutralized and a lift component produced to facilitate landing. The reversible pitch propellers may also be inclinable and the pitch of the other propellers may be variable. In one form, Fig. 1, a reversible pitch pusher propeller 3 is arranged axially of the aircraft and engine units 4, 5 driving tractor propellers 1, 2 are mounted on a shaft 6 which may be rotated through gearing by a motor 10 to incline the axes of the propellers. The axis of the shaft 6 is arranged below the centres of gravity of the units 4, 5 so that when the engines are slowed down the units tend to lock rearwardly. By suitably choosing the position of the axis of the shaft 6, the motor 10 may be dispensed with. If desired, the propellers may be inclined independently of the engine units from which the propellers are driven through jointed shafts. In modifications Figs. 5 and 6, a propeller 32 or propellers 36, 37 are arranged a substantial distance in front of the wings and reversible pitch propellers 34, 35 or 38, 39 are arranged adjacent the leading edges of the wings. The axes of the propellers at the leading edges may be inclined in the opposite direction to those well in front of the wings.
