Abstract

505,681. Pipe couplings. CHISHOLM, G. D., and AVERY, C..J., [Representatives of AVERY, W. L.], and AVERY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Dec. 11, 1937, No. 34395. [Class 99 (i)] Each member 10, 11 of a coupling has a valve 16 or 21 that closes when the members are uncoupled and opens when the members are coupled together, coupling being effected by a linkage operated by a lever 33. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the lever 33 has two side members each carrying a bush 40 having an inwardly projecting bearing 30 and , between the side members a link member with side parts 26a, 26b mounted on the bearings. The bushes have eccentric holes by which they are mounted on pins 31 projecting from the coupling member 10. Each side of, the link has a hook 36 for engagement with a projection 37 on the coupling member 11. Owing to the eccentric mounting of the bush, when' the lever 33. is rotated the link is moved longitudinally and the coupling members are drawn together. The hooks are held in engagement with the projections by a leaf spring 39. Fig. 5 shows an alternative form of the linkage in which the lever 33 carries eccentric bearings 49, 50 on which members 42, 43 of the link device are mounted respectively. When the lever is turned the links draw together projections 31, 37 on the respective coupling members. When the link is in the.position shown, the coupling members are held tightly together and a spring-pressed catch 51 prevents the lever from moving. Instead of hooks for engaging the projections on the coupling member the links may have holes fitting the projections. The arrangement of the valves in the coupling members is shown in Fig. 3. The valve 16 is fixed inside the coupling member 10 and moves the valve 21 from its seat during coupling. At the same time a projecting part 20 on the coupling member 11 moves a piston 13 away from the valve 16 and thus allows a free passage through the coupling members. Specifications 476,801 and 480,241 are referred to.
